Where We’ve Been, and Where We’re Going

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost exactly six months since TEDxGrandRapids 2013. It was a unique event, and we’re fortunate that many of our incredible speakers chose to stay an extra day or two to interact with the greater West Michigan community at movie screenings, talks, and tours while they were in town. Our Livestream for Education event even inspired Grand Rapids-area students to convene at the Downtown Market this summer to make peace dragons for victims of Oklahoma’s tornadoes. Videos of the speaker talks continue to be available on our website, ensuring that absolutely anyone who’s interested is able to tap in to the conversation that happened on that day last spring. Since May, we’ve loved seeing ideas from the event move out into the community to inspire action and change.

We’re guessing a few things have changed for you since then, and that’s one reason we’re writing today.

Those of you who took time at our event to write a letter to your future self should be receiving those letters in the mail this week. We hope it’ll be a good way to remind yourself about the sparks of inspiration you noticed last spring, and that it will also be a time to assess what you’ve done with those ideas in the meantime. And whether or not you wrote yourself a letter that day, we’d love to hear from all of you. What are you up to these days? What have you accomplished? What have you begun? How are you collaborating with others to create something new? What’s catching your eye and pushing you to learn, grow, and explore?

Our TEDxGrandRapids team met a few days ago, and we’re starting to collaborate and explore, too, as we begin to plan the 2014 event. As we do, we’d appreciate your feedback, whether you attended the 2013 event or not. What do you especially love about TEDxGrandRapids? Where do you think we should make changes? Almost everything is fair game, so don’t hold back; tell us what you think about speakers, application process, format of the day, location, breaks, and all the little details that make the experience unique.

We hope it’s been a great six months, and we’re so excited to re-start the conversation in our community. Click on this link to take a very short survey, and thanks for helping us make this year’s event even better.

I’m an introvert! I love the experience, but it is not always friendly for introverts. I like sharing ideas and having great conversations. I just need help sometimes finding the right people and places to talk to someone. So, the breaks and networking time become painful for me. Wondering if they could be shorter or have some introvert lounges that are quiet with dark corners! :-)

Thanks for your feedback! That’s exactly the kind of thing we love to know as we plan the 2014 event. (And the introverts on the planning team will back you up!) Thanks again for sharing.
